Why don't we have millions of planets?

Think about it... The sun has gravity which is holding our earth in its position and the other planets.Since the suns gravity is strong it keeps us orbiting it.Why don't asteroids get caught in this gravitational pull? Asteroids p by all the time why don't they get caught in with us, Many will start to pile up and crash into each other and create planets? why doesn't this happen?
