What does a Faint negative line mean?!?

ok ive researched this alot....my girlfriend might be pregnant and she took a pregnancy test and she had a faint negative line...neither one of us knows what this means. shes supposed to have a doctors appointment soon to find out for sure but i hate the anticipation of waiting...can somebody help out?
