American Americans are least successful minority group?

Why do Americans believe that "American Americans are least successful minority group" when the claim conflicts with rare statistics? If you look at the statistics, Native Americans are the "least successful" minority group by far. African-Americans are more educated than Hispanics yet Hispanics have a higher employment rate. Nevertheless, those statistical differences between African-Americans and Hispanics are small.
